The Gaze & The Media

In this lecture we talked about the gaze and the media and how it has affected society and what it means. I am going to highlight the main points raised in the lecture.

Women and a small percentage of men have been subjected to the gaze by the media and public. It questions how women and men, mostly women today are seen as a mere advertising object. There are more ads in the world featuring women than men, does this mean that women are easier to sell to than men?

The few pieces of work that was mentioned, I have listed below.

HANS MEMLING VANITY

Painting by Hans Memling titled VANITY

He enjoyed paintings girls in the nude and to justify his moral judgement on why it was alright for him and the public to look at her nude was that she was also vain because she was staring at herself in the mirror.

SOPHIE DAHL OPIUM

                                                Final release

The advertising standards did not agree with the first pose of the lady, stating it was too erotic, the image was then rotated vertically and this apparently changed the pose from being to ecstatic to more acceptable.
