In our Context of Practice (COP) lecture today, they talked about advertising.
There were different pieces of work shown to us today, I am going to talk about the main work that stood out to me.
Saatchi and Saatchi
These designers came up with the idea to advertise the cigarettes brand Silk Cut at a time when cigarettes couldn't be advertised in any way to encourage buyers to smoke.
So for example no adverts could make cigarettes look sexy, glamorous, sporty or healthy.
As you can see in the image below there are various images, all containing a purple silk material used in some way with an object which has already broken the rule of advertising cigarettes without putting one in the images. Silk is an expensive material and is known to be a luxury while purple is a rich colour so basically this ad is advertising cigarettes using metaphors.
The first image is a silk material with a slit down the middle, this can be sexualised by saying it looks like a woman's genitals while two rows down from that underneath the first picture, that image is another one that can also be sexualised. It can be interpreted as a man genitals entering a woman's. Most of these images are quite violent but what interests me the most is the way they have advertised the product without using it in the images. I think they thought of a loophole and went for advertising it through metaphors and this helped create these beautiful images.
