Over a week and a half in February, I helped on the set of the feature film 'United World', directed by Katie Ross and produced by Stewart Ross.
My role for the first day was 2nd Assistant Director to Katie, and for the rest of the placement I worked on the Grip crew.
I was uncomfortable at first working as 2nd AD because I had to communicate Katie's orders to the rest of the crew, and I find speaking to a group of people nerve racking but I understand why it was important to keep communicate to the crew what was going on on set. This means that everyone will run on schedule and if there was a certain person needed urgently then it is easy to contact them as everyone knows what is going on.
I found both roles engaging and fun, however I preferred working on the Grip crew because I felt I learnt more about different types of lighting equipment and learnt how to set up a crane. It was hard-work and at first I found working from 7am-7pm and even later sometimes in the evening very tiring. This was an eye opener because in the film industry filming days are generally long so this was very good practice. I learned to be more organised than usual because even after filming was wrapped up I had to get back to working on other projects.
It was good to see the different roles that are needed on a set to make things run smoothly as possible. Below are some pictures from the set, mainly from behind the scenes and it shows a range of the locations we filmed at.
I got the chance to be an extra from one scene in the film which was interesting because switching from behind the scenes to on camera was odd, but I didn't have any lines so it was not nerving.
