Context of Practice Presentation

My presentation for my dissertation was based on the question or investigation of ''How are Africans portrayed in movies and TV?

So far what I did over summer was watch these TV shows and movies, most of them were classic TV shows.

The books I have taken out have been mainly based on how africans are portrayed in Hollywood movies, the theories I felt ran through these books and movies was Identity, Post-colonialism, Racism and Politics. I was advised from the presentation to narrow down to at least one or two theories and also focus on what type of Africans, such as Caribbean, African-American, West Indian and British African. There are many different areas I could into but I think that it will be between African- American and British African. I can relate to these two as I have lived in both regions.

I thought that since most of the books I reading is relating to past films then why not look at the modern, present representation or stereotypical roles given to black characters. I will be focusing on the rise of web-series published on sites like Youtube, Vimeo and other video hosting sites. Popular web-series get picked up by TV stations which allows the small start-ups film groups to showcase different identities and scripts of black people.

This is what my presentation was on so the next step is to create a literature search, start being more selective on the choice of books and preparing a gantt chart for the project.
