My Moodboard for the Troll |
I create the moodboard above while Sophie did the two below, we wanted to broaden the research for the troll before deciding how we wanted it to look and since we knew that we wanted it to look scary, it was just making sure the features and body looked intimidating.
So I and Sophie had to also take on the role of concept artist and below are the images I have drawn myself, mainly for the troll character.
Sophie has done some concept art for the girl and troll also, and now Dan has produced some drawings which have led to the final look of the troll.
In the drawings, we were experimenting with the face and how it could look scary, so a tip given to me to keep the eyes small, mouth big as this are key features for troll-like characters.
We also liked the idea of the troll having a hunchback so you can see in the side profile drawings I was experimenting with where the hunchback would be placed and how it would look.
So the key features we wanted in the troll were:
- hunchback
- triangle-like shaped head, small at the top, wide at the jaw, pointy ears, big teeth, big tummy and chubby boobs, one hand shaped like a rock and the other normal with three fingers, has a small skirt to cover its modesty and an over the shoulder bag.
Doing the concept art for some of the environment and characters has helped me improve my drawing skills in terms of proportion and composition, especially when drawing the environment, so even though I had to take on some extra roles, I got to improve on those skills at least.
This is Sophie's coloured version of the troll character, she was experimenting with colours and how the troll might look. For the final look we did not go with this colour palette, but at least this drawing gave us a choice of how it could look.
Below is the final concept art look for the troll done by Dan, and he has produced a coloured version which influenced the final look of the troll, as on the 3D model the rock on his back and arm is pink instead of brown.
